About the finalist

amylouisephilip
Brighton, United Kingdom

I am a Brighton based mum of two little girls seizing the opportunity to work for myself, doing something I love, while life has thrown me the chance. Like many other parents of young children, I found that the nine to five didn't work anymore and flexible working hours was the way forward. Knitting was my hobby and I enjoyed knitting gifts for friends' baby showers. These friends encouraged me to start a shop because they wanted to buy my knitwear for others. After buying a vintage knitting machine in April 2015 Button and Blue was born. I enjoy the whole process, from jotting down ideas and sourcing yarn, to knitting samples and producing the final products which I am proud to photograph and list in my shop. I knit with natural fibres, such as British wool and 100% Merino wool. The inspiration for my pieces often starts with the wool itself, which I find in my local yarn shop that champions ethically minded, British brands. I love beautiful, classic colours, and my designs are minimal, yet fun and current. I like to add a pop of fun to useful, everyday wardrobe staples. I would like the future of Button and Blue to continue with new collections for Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer in my own shop and also with retailers. Long term, I would like to invest in myself by improving my machine knitting skills. Finally, I would like to see an established network of local, like minded, parent run businesses.
